2016 Reading List

Sword of Destiny by Andrzej Sapkowski

Going back over my notes, I see this year's favourite was Andrzej Sapkowski's Sword of Destiny, a short story collection originally published in Polish in 1992 as Miecz Przeznaczenia. This choice may or may not have had something to do with the fact I played all three Witcher games back to back this year, along with the Witcher Adventure Board Game and an awful lot of Gwent (although I suspect strongly it does). The stories don't spoil the narrative of the games (and the games don't spoil the stories), rather, they inform each other in a way I found to be not only fun but also very, very satisfying.

2017 Spring Semester at Cap

This coming spring I'll be offering three creative writing courses at Capilano University and we've scheduled them to encourage writers to take The Story Writer's Workshop first, and then follow it up with either Story Structure: How to Build a Story or Beyond the First Draft: Revising Your Work.

This fall I'll be offering three creative writing courses at Capilano University and we've scheduled them in such a way to encourage students to take either The Story Writer's Workshop or Story Structure: How to Build a Story first, and then follow up with the brand-new Extraordinary People: The Craft of Character Creation (designed in response to an overwhelming number of requests from both last spring and fall).

Something to Think About

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson

I've been reading Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings lately (I've been quite enjoying it, too), and last night I came upon a couple of quotes I didn't want to forget so I figured I share them here. They appear on page 806 in my edition (I had to share that part, too, because, well, this book has over 1,000 pages and I wanted to pat myself on the back for reading them all so far).
