Goodreads Giveaway

Goodreads

Congratulations to the three winners of my Goodreads Giveaway! Maggie, Stacia, and Faisal your signed copies are in the mail. Thank you to everyone who entered (all 829 of you), those of you who shelved Rage as "Want to Read" (all 296 of you), and those of you who chose to follow me on Goodreads (all 5 of you). I hope you enjoy my stories.

New Reads for Short Story Lovers

The Toronto Star

If you scroll down to the third entry of Sarah Murdoch's article from Friday's The Toronto Star, you'll find a quick write-up of Rage...(and a little about my website, too).

Goodreads Book Giveaway

Starting today and running until November 30, 2017, I'm listing a Goodreads Giveaway for 3 signed copies of Rage. If you live in either Canada or the United States, I encourage you to enter, because, well, did I mention it's free? All you need to do is have a Goodreads account (which is free, too).

First Fiction Friday

All Lit Up

The very kind people at All Lit Up have shared a few words about Rage in their First Fiction Friday feature. I invite you to take a peek to see their take on why you need to read this now as well as which two authors, if jammed together, come closest to encapsulating Rage.

Word Vancouver

Word Vancouver

If you've been following me on Facebook, you've got to know by now what a social media neophyte I am. Even though I've set up an open Facebook event for my free Word Vancouver workshop on How to Build a Story (today at 4:00 p.m. in the Vancouver Public Library's Alice MacKay Room), and people have been responding to say they're either coming or interested, I really have no clue as to how many people are actually going to show up. So, if I've guessed wrong and there are more people than I anticipate, here's a PDF version of today's handout.

How to Build a Story

I should also mention that everyone who signs up for my very infrequent newsletter (which covers my future course offerings and other book-related news) at the Word Vancouver event itself, will be entered in a random draw (happening October 1, 2017) to win a free signed copy of my upcoming collection of short stories, Rage. I hope to see you there.

How to Build a Story

Canadian Authors Association Vancouver

The Metro Vancouver branch of the Canadian Authors Association has very kindly asked me to give a presentation at this year's Word Vancouver festival. So, if you find yourself near the Vancouver Public Library on Sunday, September 24, 2017, say between the hours of 4:00 and 5:00 p.m., I invite you to join me in the Alice MacKay Room (temporarily rechristened Port of View for the festival) for a workshop I'm calling How to Build a Story (actually, I invite you to attend the entire festival as it is Western Canada’s largest celebration of literacy and reading and should be pretty cool).

Rage: The Official Invitation

Book Launch for Rage by John Mavin

We're celebrating the launch of my first book--a collection of dark literary fiction called Rage--and if you're reading this, you're invited. There'll be drinks, appies, copies of the book for sale, and even t-shirts. I'll also be reading from "The High Alpinist's Survival Guide" (the final story in the collection), and if you'd like, I'll even sign copies, too.

Fall Workshop

After a successful run in the spring, I'll again be privately offering Writing the Short Story: From Blank Page to Manuscript Submission this fall on Saturday mornings from September 9 to October 28. This eight-week limited-enrollment workshop focuses on you writing and polishing a single short story (in any genre) to publication readiness. If this sounds like something you'd be interested in, I'd love to hear from you. For details, please check out my upcoming courses.

I've Been Blurbed

Rage by John Mavin

I've just received the okay to share my back-cover blurbs with you, and to be honest, I'm quite excited, rather moved, and deeply grateful. Four writers I respect very much had some wonderful things to say about Rage.

Stories of Desperation and Anger

BC Booklook

BC Booklook has posted a teaser about Rage on their website. Titled "Stories of Desperation and Anger," the post talks a little about Rage and a little about me. I had no idea this was coming out and was quite happy to find it.

A Little Announcement...or Two

I joined Facebook. Only years after everyone else, but, well, there it is. I've resisted for so long--both because I believe corporations co-opting social networking platfoms weakens their value and also, well, I never thought the banalities of my private life were shareworthy. But then someone explained to me the nuances of the Facebook page and how it's different from a Facebook profile. And when that someone works at the publishing house who's going to be publishing my first book, well, I figured I'd better listen.

Private Creative Writing Workshops

Due to the heartening and overwhelming encouragement I've received from many former students, I am now offering private instruction in creative writing. Before I continue, let me say now that if you can find what you're looking for in a traditional continuing education program, then by all means, I strongly encourage you to do so. However, if you're looking for something you can't find anywhere else, then maybe I can help you.
