Canadian Authors Association Vancouver

The Metro Vancouver branch of the Canadian Authors Association has very kindly asked me to give a presentation at this year's Word Vancouver festival. So, if you find yourself near the Vancouver Public Library on Sunday, September 24, 2017, say between the hours of 4:00 and 5:00 p.m., I invite you to join me in the Alice MacKay Room (temporarily rechristened Port of View for the festival) for a workshop I'm calling How to Build a Story (actually, I invite you to attend the entire festival as it is Western Canada’s largest celebration of literacy and reading and should be pretty cool).

How to Build a Story

Good stories don't just happen, they're built, and as architects use blueprints, writers need sound structures to create effective emotional journeys for their readers. In this workshop we'll explore the structural elements shared by all stories (from linear to unconventional), uncover the differences between plot and structure, and give you the tools to build emotionally satisfying stories again and again.
